The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) will begin providing approval services for electrical energy measuring devices (electric meters) in cooperation with the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) and the Distribution Code Review Panel (DCRP).
The initiative will help promote the manufacture and marketing of measurement tools that are compatible with the requirements of Omani Standard Specification No. (OS 1648) for prepaid electric meter systems and Omani Standard Specification No. (OS 1647) for electric meter systems.
It will also contribute to strengthening the national quality infrastructure, which supports the local economy, as well as enhance trade in such devices.
A framework agreement signed with APSR and DCRP assigns the service of checking documents related to the type approval request for electric meters to the DCRP in coordination with the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology at the Ministry.
Faiza bint Hamad al-Mashrafiyya, Director of the National Center for Measurement and Calibration in the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology, said: “The approval of type of electric meters is based on the standard specifications and technical requirements set by the Omani standard specifications for electric meters issued by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, and technical standards of the electrical energy measurement systems and the adopted standards in the electricity sector.”
She added: “The type approval request can be defined as a request submitted by the electric meter suppliers or their manufacturers to the competent authorities to check documents and technical reports related to regular checks and performance checks for one or more samples of electric meters, with the aim of verifying and checking that the electric meters meet the mandatory requirements and the technical standards that approved by the competent authorities.”
The Ministry will also issue a type approval certificate for electric meters in accordance with the framework agreement, she added.
