Repair of Al Batinah road portions hit by cyclone on track

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said it has restored 60 km or 92.5 per cent of Al Batinah highway stretch between Al Tharmad roundabout and Hafeet roundabout that was damaged by cyclone Shaheen.


The MoTCIT continues to implement projects for periodic maintenance of roads and repair of roads affected by the cyclone at a cost of RO 250 million. This includes an amount of RO 27 million for covering the cost of maintenance contracts for dirt and mountain roads for a five-year period, and RO 57 million for the cost of asphalt road maintenance contracts for a five-year period.


The repair works at Wadi Hai road, Wadi Al Jahawir road, Wadi Al Sarmi road, Al Khad-Al Aqeer road, Wadi Al Qanoot road and Wadi Bani Omar road have reached an advanced phase. The projects involve construction of viaducts at several wadi crossings, repaving of asphalt layers and installation of traffic safety requirements.



Among the roads opened to traffic following the completion of restoration work is the Wadi Al Qanoot road in the Wilayat of Al Khabourah in North Al Batinah Governorate which starts from Wadi Al Sarmi and ends at the town of Al Qanoot with a total length of 7.5 km, Wadi Al Hawasneh road in the Wilayat of Al Khabourah in North Al Batinah Governorate both of which were affected by cyclone Shaheen.


The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said that the repair and restoration of Wadi Bani Omar in the Wilayat of Saham is almost complete with 99 per cent of the work accomplished thus far and many parts of it have already been opened to traffic. The project involves repair of damaged protections along the road and the implementation of concrete valley crossings at 11 locations as well as construction of viaducts at three locations in Wadi Al Jahawir area.
