MUSCAT, MARCH 21

The Oman Basketball Association (OBA) has signed agreements with coaches of training centres for basketball players in the governorates. The agreements include 12 club centres, which are Qurayat, Bausher, Ahli Sidab, Seeb, Nizwa, Al Bashayer, Sohar, Al Shabab, Salalah, Musandam, a centre for training young women, and a centre for preparing female players for national teams based in the Bausher Sports Complex.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Eng Khalfan al Naabi, Chairman of the Oman Basketball Association, Hisham bin Juma al Sinani, Director-General of Sports Welfare and Development at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, members of the OBA Board of Directors, and coaches of basketball training centres.

The signing of the OBA for training contracts with the coaches of the centres came after the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth recently launched a project to develop a system for preparing athletes under the slogan 'From Exploration to Achievement' as part of the government support projects provided by the Ministry to sports associations and committees to raise the efficiency of their performance and increase the effectiveness of the sports performance system.

The Oman Basketball Association chose a number of coaches for training in the centres for preparing basketball players, namely Yasser al Sulaimani, Mahdi al Busaidy, Ali al Balushi, Alaa al Hadhrami, Nidhal al Mughiriyah, Ahmed Bu Hass, Sulaiman al Hinai, Ashraf al Yaarubi, Ammar al Kathiri, Majid al Balushi, Abdullah al Muqbali and Mohammed al Dhahouri.

OBA Vice-Chairman Ali bin Salam al Yaarubi, who is also heading the Basketball Players Preparation Centres Committee, gave a presentation that included the tasks of the committee to activate the centres by setting up a mechanism for making contracts for coaches and their assistants and providing transportation and training tools.

Shortly after signing the agreements, Eng Khalfan al Naabi, stressed the importance of partnership agreements with a number of clubs to activate centres for preparing basketball players in various governorates.

TWO CENTRES FOR GIRLS

The project to launch these centres comes in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth. The centres are aimed at providing players for the clubs and the national teams. Two centres have been identified for girls, due to the women’s interest in basketball.

Al Naabi added that a large number of players joined the centres, and this is an excellent indicator to ensure the continuity of the work of the centres. The partnership between the ministry and the OBA resulted in the ministry providing financial support, while the association set the mechanism for the work of the centres and set the criteria and conditions for selecting coaches and players and technical supervision over them. The association will also follow with up the clubs and their boards of directors to find out about developments in the progress of work in the centres.

The main objective of these centres is to spread the game more widely in the Sultanate of Oman, form a strong player base and prepare technical and administrative cadres.
