Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, on Sunday hosted a technical workshop on selecting and studying the management of sites designated for aquaculture in the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI).
The workshop was held in cooperation with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).
Participants from several countries in the workshop explore themes related to the field of aquaculture with the floating cage system, such as the principles and criteria for selecting sites for aquaculture.
They also review the experiences of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) in the field of planning and identifying sites for aquaculture, as well as presenting the experience of countries bordering the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
The workshop also includes holding joint practical sessions to introduce the areas designated for aquaculture.
The opening ceremony of the workshop was held under the auspices of Eng Yaqoub Khalfan al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Fisheries.
Organizing this workshop comes in implementation of the recommendations of the 11th session of the Regional Commission for Fisheries to choose the Sultanate of Oman to host the workshop.
Fish farming nowadays is one of the fastest growing sectors of food production worldwide, growing at a rate of 9 per cent annually. In light of the indicators of increasing world population growth for the next two decades, projections indicate that an additional 40 million tonnes of aquatic food will be needed during 2025 to meet current per capita consumption.
