As many as 27,141 pilgrims have registered for this year’s Haj rituals on the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs portal after it was opened on February 21.

The Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah topped the list with 4,824 registrations while Muscat has 3,894 pilgrims.

These were followed by Al Dhahirah (1,395), Al Wusta (165), Dhofar (2,232), Musandam (208), Al Buraimi (386), Al Batinah North (4,027), Al Batinah South (2,548), Al Sharqiyah North (1,816), and Al Sharqiyah South (2,610).

The number of expatriates who have registered their interest to carry out their Haj this year stands at 3,036 as of March 1.

This year, 14,000 pilgrims will be visiting the holy lands where as many as 2 million pilgrims will be following the rituals of holy Haj this year.

"We will be sending 14,000 pilgrims from the Sultanate of Oman to perform this year's holy Haj during the season 2023 for the rituals based on an agreement with the General Authority for Awqaf (GAA) of Saudi Arabia where we agreed to maintain the status quo of pre-Covid time," Ali al Ghafri from the Haj department of the Ministry told the Observer.

Saudi Arabia has earlier announced that it would be hosting 2 million pilgrims from across the world.

The deadline to apply for Haj, which is likely to be held during the end of June and beginning of July, will end on March 4 and both citizens and residents in the Sultanate above 18 years of age were urged to register on www.hajj.om.

The registration can be completed by entering the civil number, the personal ID card, or the mobile phone number if the identity card chip and the SIM card provided in the phone is supported by the online authentication system.

Priority to travel to Mecca will be given to first-timers and aged people besides people suffering from chronic or life-threatening diseases.

Any man who is not less than 67 years of age or any woman who is less than 65 years old or who has a visual or motor disability is entitled to obtain a companion for the Haj.
