The symposium aimed to focus on the position of the Sultanate of Oman in the world cultural heritage, and on the Omani cultural components included in various cultural lists of the UNESCO. It also aimed to explore the mechanism for investing these components culturally and economically, in addition to getting acquainted with the UNESCO cultural chairs in the Sultanate of Oman.

The opening ceremony included a recorded speech by Amna Salim al Balushi, Secretary of the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. She underscored the importance of culture in bringing people together, promoting harmony and understanding and spreading peace, and its role as a driver for comprehensive development through the important roles that culture plays in increasing common interests and promoting mutual benefits, as well as empowering people in various aspects of creativity.

A visual presentation on the Omani presence in the UNESCO was also presented, which included the most important official visits made by Omani officials to the UNESCO, the prominent of which was the visit of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour to the organization in 1989.
