MUSCAT: Hajar al Shueili and Balqis al Hosani won the silver medal at the 13th International Invention Fair in the Middle East, which was organized by the Kuwait Scientific Club during February 12 to 15 in Kuwait. Over 190 people from the Middle East took part in the contest to design environmentally friendly interlock tiles made from recycled materials, which will be a partial substitute for cement.

Balqis Al Hosani, a graduate of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, said: “Participation in the competition began with registration via the website of the Gulf Patent Office, and we were selected to represent the Sultanate of Oman from among a large number of candidates in the thirteenth International Exhibition of Inventions in the Middle East.”

Hajar al Shueili, a road engineer at Al Dakhiliyah Municipality, said that the idea of the project is to exploit waste and convert them into products of economic value. It will contribute to reducing environmental pollution and help construction. We designed a product that contains zero cement and replace it with natural materials of high quality with the same durability and performance.

IIFME aims at providing a platform for Arab inventors to meet with their counterparts from non-Arab speaking countries, strengthening cooperation between investors and inventors and attracting well-known inventors to participate in the fair and socialise with investors and Arab inventors.

It is the largest specialised exhibition of inventions and innovations in the Middle East and deemed the second most significant international exhibition in the world. Held in collaboration with the International Exhibition of Geneva, it is also an opportunity to foster the culture of invention and innovation among people and strengthen the existing relationships among the inventors, companies, corporations and investors worldwide.

The achievements of the previous Invention Fairs are proof of the significance and importance of the desired message to be delivered via the exhibition. The attendance was estimated at more than 15,000, clearly showing the public interest.

IIFME will be focused on the recent advanced inventions and technologies in mechanical and industrial tools, computer science, construction, electronics, agriculture and gardening, teaching methods, aviation, motor vehicles, alternative energy, medicine and many more.

The fair also hosts outstanding researchers as keynote lecturers, along with ensuring enough time for stimulating panel discussions.
