MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman expressed its sympathy with New Zealand following the Cyclone Gabrielle that hit several cities. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Oman expressed its sincere condolences to the government, the friendly people of New Zealand and families of the victims due to the cyclone. It also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, the Consulate General of the Sultanate of Oman in Australia said in a statement that all Omanis and students on scholarships at various universities in New Zealand are safe. The Consulate General urged everyone to take caution and avoid beaches and all coastal places, especially those close to the New Zealand city of Wellington, and to follow instructions issued by competent authorities in New Zealand, and requested them to communicate directly with the Consulate General in Australia during an emergency.

New Zealand declared a national state of emergency for only the third time in its history on Tuesday after a cyclone flooded parts of the country, knocking out power to nearly 250,000 residents and stranding people on rooftops.
