A first-of-its-kind water supply project to Jabal Al Akhdhar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate will be launched under the auspices of Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, on Sunday.

Initiated and supervised by the Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company, the project will cover households and commercial establishments in and around Jabal Al Akhdhar.

“This project of independent water supply project for Jabal Al Akhdhar aims at making the area self-reliant in terms of potable water and to support the tourism in the village which is the highest peak in the region standing at 1,700ft above the sea level (ASL) and the construction which took years, was strenuous due to its geographical location,” a spokesperson, OWWSC, said.

“We have many pumping stations in the country and Jabal Al Akhdhar was catered to by the pumping station located in Al Dakhiliyah. But with this new pumping station, whose construction was completed in 2018, will serve the water needs of the people of this mountainous village,” he added.

The water supply project is part of an investment initiative to provide potable water to all of Oman’s villages and towns and will also spur tourism and economic development in this popular holiday destination in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. This vital project will go a long way in meeting the drinking water requirements of the residents of Jabal Al Akhdhar. When fully operational with a network of pipelines running a total length of 120 km, it will cover all parts of Jabal Al Akhdhar.

Also as part of the project which is able to produce 1.76 million gallon per day, three reservoirs were built with capacities ranging from 800 to 5000 cubic metres. Marked as a milestone project in the history of providing water supply to various villages and remote areas, this project is implemented despite the challenges posed by the topography of the surrounding area.

“This water supply project is vital to the sustainable development of Jabal Al Akhdhar and its local population. A substantial support to tourism, investment promotion and development in the mountains is highly anticipated.”
