35 basketball umpires attend Asian course

As many as 35 basketball umpires attended the Asian umpiring course which concluded in Muscat on Thursday. The four-day course was organised by Oman Basketball Association (OBA) in coordination with FIBA – Asia. The umpiring workshop was presented by certified lecturer Waleed Mersall Abi Rashid, who is head of umpires in FIBA – Asia.


The approved course focused on different topics including theoretical and practical sessions that dealt with an explanation of basketball rules and regulations. Also, the trainer highlighted on the legal interpretations of the various refereeing common cases in the game besides the philosophy of match management, psychology, exercises in the movements of referees and the use of signals, the elements of umpiring mechanics, triple refereeing and the roles of table referees and implementing a number of practical applications in various cases.


Eng Khalfan bin Saleh al Naabi, Chairman of Oman Basketball Association (OBA), said that development of umpires is one of the priorities of the association.


“The refereeing committee in OBA is very keen on the development of the umpires and improving their skills. Also, the committee is working hard to keep the referees updated with the latest laws, rules and regulations of basketball. The association is collaborating with the regional and international federations to organise these kinds of umpiring workshops to raise the refereeing levels of the local umpires. This will assist the local umpires to officiate the games in the domestic and international level competitions,” he concluded.
