Oman to host conference on earth sciences, energy

The Sultanate of Oman will host as many as 162 people representing 26 countries for he First International Conference on Earth Sciences and Energy Transition to be held at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, on Monday.


The Conference is convened in the backdrop of the ever-increasing global demand for energy across many countries as the population increases. According to the United Nation report, the world population is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, and energy demand is increasing from 11.4 billion tonnes of oil equivalent to 17.7 billion. The increase in global energy demand and consumption has significant implications for climate change.


Organised by the Earth Sciences Research Centre at the SQU in cooperation with the Unesco Chair in Ophiolite Studies, and with the support of Occidental, PDO, Daleel Petroleum, Petrogas, and CGG, the 5-day conference will see brainstorming sessions moderated by eminent persona from across the world in order to highlight the role of earth sciences and their importance in the transition to clean energy.


“The high-level conference is an attempt to know the findings of studies in the transition to clean energy and to enhance the fight against carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, the conference will also make efforts to understand the various types of alternative energy and which ones are more exploitable and economically appropriate while sharing the global as well as regional expertise in this area,” a note from the organising committee said.


Besides seven keynote speakers from the Sultanate of Oman, experts in clean energy from Australia, Britain and Pakistan will deliver their speeches in the two sessions of the conference.


The topics covered are as wide and diverse as hydrogen energy, thermal energy, solar energy, wind energy, in addition to water energy, and tidal energy, besides energy storage, energy wastage, the environment, economics, policies and management. Energy, as well as the absorption, exploitation and storage of carbon dioxide and non-renewable energy sources will also be in the focus of the conference on different days.


The Organising Committee was established with Mohamed El Ghali as Chairman, Arshad Ali as Co-Chairman, and Osman Abdullah, Talal al Hosni, Mohammed al Kindi, Maria bint Khalfan al Kharousi of SQQ, and Abdulmunim al Zakwani of the Geological Society of Oman as members.


The organising committee has accepted 139 abstracts to be presented at the conference, which includes 64 lectures in attendance and 28 lectures via visual communication. Additionally, 7 scientific posters and 10 posters via visual communication will be presented at the conference. The organising committee has organised two training sessions and one field visit for the participants from various countries.
