RIYADH: Oman and Saudi Arabia signed on Saturday an executive programme for cooperation in the field of communications and information technology infrastructure. It builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two sides last November.
The signing of the programme came against the backdrop of Oman’s participation in the international technical conference "LEAP", which is set to open in the the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Monday.
The programme aims to take advantage of the geographical location of the two brotherly countries and the submarine cables that pass through them. It also seeks to create a common work environment to enhance cooperation in the field of infrastructure for communications and information technology services, and high-speed digital connectivity for data exchange.
The executive programme provides for conducting a detailed study of the options for implementing digital connectivity, the expected economic effects and the investment cost of the connectivity options through investment entities and licensed companies between the two parties, and determining the procedures in negotiating with investors and service providers of data centers, hosting and global cloud services that target the regional presence to maximize the benefit of this digital connectivity.
The executive programme was signed by Dr Ali bin Amer al Shidhani, Under-Secretary of the Omani Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology; Eng Bassam bin Abdullah al Bassam, Under-Secretary of the Saudi Ministry of Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Infrastructure, in the presence of Eng Said bin Hamoud al Ma’awali, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and his Saudi counterpart Eng Abdullah bin Amer al Sawaha.
