Tourism in South and North Al Sharqiyah governorates got a boost with an increasing number of events organised this year. According to the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the number of events organised this year includes the Empty Quarter Festival, the Desert Adventures Festival in North Al Sharqiyah.

The Omani Maritime Heritage Festival, which will continue until February 19, reflects the rich maritime history of the governorate in particular and at the same time explores the relationship between man and the sea.

The Maritime Festival highlights the historical journey of Omani ships which used to transport Omani products and a food carnival that presents Omani and international dishes prepared with locally sourced seafood.

Other activities include events such as windsurfing, sailing, sea fishing, and traditional boat racing.

The ministry seeks to hold many festivals to stimulate tourism and economic movement, and to highlight the tourism potential in various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. These festivals will also help improve hotel occupancy rates.

The government has recently launched the commercial hot air balloon service for the first time in the country.

Royal Balloons Project will be operated in partnership between Omani and Turkish companies, and each balloon ride is for between 40 and 60 minutes. It can reach a height of 600 metres above sea level.

The companies will operate balloons between October and April tourist season.
