The Ministry of Labour has cracked down on several expatriates for visa violations, arresting 26 individuals who were found to be working on tourist visas. In a separate incident, the ministry also arrested 22 workers for violating provisions of the country's Labour Law.
The ministry has also referred a private sector establishment to the judicial authorities for failing to pay its workers for multiple months and for violating Articles 51 and 53 of the Labour Law. According to the law, workers who are paid on a monthly basis must receive their wages at least once a month, while those paid on a daily basis must receive weekly payments for work completed, with the remainder of their wage paid in full the following week after completion.
The law also requires that if an employment relationship ends, the worker must be paid all outstanding amounts immediately, unless they leave the job voluntarily. In such cases, the employer must pay the worker's wages and all their dues within seven days of their departure.
