An international medical conference on ‘Uro-Gyno-Oncology’ was organised in Muscat recently as a part of Annual Continuous Medical Education Programme aiming at fostering the knowledge and expertise of doctors and other medical practitioners.

Organised by Lama Polyclinic LLC and Muscat Family Physicians’ Group in association with Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru and Global Treatment Services, a number of experts from Oman and India took part in the day-long sessions.

Talking about advantage of Latest Robotic Surgery in Radical Prostatectomy and Partial Nephrectomy, Professor & Dr Mohan K, Senior Consultant Urology and Transplant Surgeon emphasised on several points.

Latest Robotic Surgery in Radical Prostatectomy and Partial Nephrectomy gives a surgeon a 10 X magnification which helps robot-assisted kidney transplant recipient surgery even in difficult clinical situations, according to the doctor.

Also, it provides multiple arms with 7 degrees of freedom, vastly better than human dexterity and is like working with 2 right hands as it provides 3D vision Hence it is immensely superior to conventional surgery.

Dr Rubina Shahnawaz, consultant urogynecology, gave an update as follows.

With growing older female population and increasing life expectancy, increased need for urogynecology specialists.

One in three women above the age of 40 experience some form of pelvic floor dysfunction either as urine leakage or in difficulty emptying bladder completely. Due to complex interplay of repeated deliveries and female hormones, need for a sub specialist to individually tailor and provide management options to such patients.

Both the speakers supported their presentation with videos of different operations they carry out in the Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru, fastest growing robotic surgery centre in India. They have performed close to 1,000 robotic procedures.

The meeting was attended by around 60 doctors which included Urologist, Gynecologist, Oncologist and Family Physicians from both Government and Private Health establishments.

“It is important to be aware of the latest technology and procedures to benefit our patients”. Dr Sanjay Dalal, Founder -- Muscat Family Physicians Group & the Main Organiser, said.
