HM Cup quarterfinals begin today

MUSCAT: The first-leg quarterfinals for His Majesty’s Cup 2022-23 championship will begin on Sunday. Al Suwaiq will host Al Bashayer in Al Rustaq Sports complex while Seeb Stadium will be the venue for Oman Club and Al Rustaq’s clash. The matches of last 8 stage will continue on Monday as four-time winners Al Oruba will face Al Nahda in Al Buraimi Sports Complex while Seeb will take on Al Shabab at Seeb Stadium.

All the teams will look to register positive results in the first-leg match which will help them to attend the deciding game with better condition and less pressure.

After an absence of six years from the last title, Al Suwaiq will aim to rekindle their memories of 2016-2017 as they had lifted the coveted title. Essam al Subhi and his team-mates are in good shape after their win in the last round of Omantel League against Al Oruba. The northern Batinah team had managed to defeat Dhofar in the round of 16 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

On the other side, Al Bashayer will target to do better in the HM Cup as the team is struggling in the top domestic league. Despite the opponents leading in terms of technical performance and squad strength, the HM Cup matches have their own calculations and the Al Dakhiliyah team might snatch a positive result against Al Suwaiq today evening.

In another tight fixture, Oman Club will eye to take the maximum benefit from today’s game against Al Rustaq as they will play the match at home in Seeb stadium.

Oman Club head coach Idrees al Marabat will depend on the team’s star player Mahmood al Hasani who delivered top game for his team in last match against Al Ittihad in the league. Mahmood scored two goals in the match to help register crucial win for his team. Oman Club’s squad features strong names including Yazeed al Rawahi, AbdulWahed al Hanai and Faisal al Buraiki among others.

Al Rustaq, last edition runners-up, will target for another accomplishment this season as the team is delivering top show till now. Al Rustaq beat Bahla in the league few days ago and they had defeated the same team in the round 16 in the HM Cup. Hence, the team is in very good shape to put up a good match. The second-leg matches of the last-eight stage will take place in the second week of February.
