MUSCAT: As part of the efforts to curb the problem of random and permanent parking, new areas will be brought under the paid parking system in the capital from January 1, 2023.

The newly added areas are the parking lots located near the building of the Directorate-General of Labour Welfare at the Ministry of Labour in Ruwi, Al Khoud and the new car parks at Al Khoud souq, and the one behind the Ooredoo store.

It may be noted that these areas were included in the paid parking system last year, but withdrawn by the authorities following requests from the public.

The parking reservation methods include reservation via SMS to 90091 for 30 to 300 minutes.

The user will receive a text message confirming the reservation, including the ticket number, vehicle number and code, and the time requested.

In the event that the user wishes to extend the time, all they have to do is send another message to the number 90091 and follow the same steps

Users can also apply via the Baladati application on smartphones to book parking spaces for vehicles by hours, as well as to obtain a parking permit.

Muscat Municipality, meanwhile, had to tow away abandoned vehicles and take legal measures against the owners.

These vehicles may be misused by anti-socials and pose security and environmental risks, in addition to affecting the general appearance of the city.
