MUSCAT, DEC 28

The postponed final of the 52nd His Majesty’s Cup hockey championship will be held on January 1, 2023, the New Year Day, the Oman Hockey Association announced on Wednesday. The match will kick off at 7 pm at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat.

The title-clash between Ahli Sidab and Al Nasr was scheduled to be held on Tuesday but was postponed due to the rainy weather conditions to Sunday.

Shaikh Salim bin Mustahail al Mashani, Adviser at the Diwan of Royal Court, will be the chief guest and present the trophy.

Ahli Sidab, coached by Aiman al Katheri, are targetting their 13th title in the tournament while Mohammed al Battrani-coached Al Nasr are aiming to clinch their ninth trophy.

Ahli Sidab captain Salah bin Nasser al Saadi said his team is having good momentum in the tournament.

“Ahli Sidab are in good form in the tournament. We are confident to lift the second title of the season after the OHA League,” the Ahli Sidab captain said.

Al Nasr’s Bassim al Durbait hoped to claim the first title for the club in this season.

“We want to end the year with a trophy. We have a good chance to win the first title for the season. Our boys will work hard for this target,” the Al Nasr captain said.

Jasjeet Singh and Ravinder Valmiki, Indian professional players of Ahli Sidab and Al Nasr respectively, promised a cracker of a match.

“The match will be keenly fought between the well-experienced teams. We have been playing the HM Cup for some years now. We can feel the difference in technical standards and match competitions over the years,” they said.

Al Seeb edged Salalah 6-5 in penalty shoot-out to finish third after the play-off match last Sunday.

After the final round, Al Nasr topped with 13 points, followed by Ahli Sidab in second place with 11 points and qualified for the final. Al Seeb came in third place with 7 points. Salalah were fourth with 6 points and Bausher finished in fifth place with 5 points. Nizwa came sixth with no points.

Defending champions Sohar failed to get through to the final round from Group A with other three – Al Nasr, Al Seeb and Bausher advancing to next stage.

From Group B, Ahli Sidab, Nizwa and Salalah made it to the final round as Saham were eliminated.
