A work of art at this year’s documenta exhibition - a piece that was also a functioning crèche for parents and small children - could remain in the German city of Kassel if donations are forthcoming.
The city, documenta, Museum Fridericianum and the artist called for donations for the purchase of the work “Parents and Toddlers Crèche /Public Daycare.”
Artist Graziela Kunsch set up the crèche on the ground floor of the Fridericianum during documenta fifteen. It was open from 10 am to 5pm and free of charge for babies and toddlers up to the age of 3,along with their carers.
With donations, the crèche would be available for use as it was during the exhibition. A parents’ initiative, which is in the process of founding a supporting association for this purpose, will be responsible for its operation. In addition, the city will provide start-up financing of ?15,000 ($15,955) per year.
The project is inspired by the pedagogical approach of the 20th century Hungarian paediatrician Emmi Pikler, who emphasised the initiative of small children. The offer was accompanied by a photo exhibition, video work and the library of play.
The artwork is to be bought for the price of ?178,500, the city of Kassel announced. Until further notice, suitable space and infrastructure would be available in the Kassel market hall to enable the reopening of the facility in a timely manner.
If the fundraising goal is not reached within the three-month campaign and the artist does not agree to the sum reached as the purchase price, the donors will receive their money back, it said. — dpa
