Muscat - Dr. Abdullah bin Sulaiman al Abri, advisor and representative of the Sultanate of Oman at the International Energy Agency (IEA), based in Paris, said there are three joint projects being worked on between the Sultanate of Oman and the agency in the field of green hydrogen.

The consultant and representative of the Sultanate of Oman at the International Energy Agency said that the first project is to develop green hydrogen markets for energy and local industry uses, as it will work to identify the industrial and productive sectors that currently depend on natural gas and develop the possibility of converting them to green hydrogen, thus reducing dependence on natural gas.

It will also provide green hydrogen for the development of other industrial projects that raise the economic value of natural gas and work to attract investors and technology makers to the Sultanate of Oman.

Abdullah al Abri said that the second project is to build competitive local capabilities in the field of green hydrogen production and to benefit from the infrastructure that characterizes the Sultanate of Oman in the fields of oil, gas, ports, the spot electricity market, while the third project is to build a system similar to a simulator that simulates the total income of the state.

It will allow adding contributions of the green hydrogen to the national income of the Sultanate of Oman in the year 2050 based on the quantities that will be exported abroad, the trade balance, and business and employment opportunities, indicating that the system project is expected to be completed in mid-2023.

There are other projects that have been discussed with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, such as the issue of ways to store renewable energy in the Sultanate of Oman, whether by batteries, converting it into hydrogen, or pumping seawater through artificial lakes, and it is extracted according to the need to generate electricity, and discussing opportunities for localizing supply chains and ways of cooperation with Tanmia, Energy Development Oman or with the Oman Investment Authority.

He said that the International Energy Agency (IEA) works in the fields of energy, renewable energy, and climate change and seeks to motivate member states and countries represented in the agency to use renewable energies in order to achieve energy security and preserve the environment from pollutants that lead to climate changes.
