Al Dakhiliyah marks Int’l Day of the Disabled

An open day was hosted celebrate the International Day of the Disabled for the year 2022 in Al Naseem Park in the Wilayat of Bahla recently. The event was organised by the Directorate General of Education in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, represented by the Department of Special Education and Continuing Learning.


The event, which came under the slogan (From them we learn hope), was under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Khamis bin Ali Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education. Saif bin Mubarak al Julandani, Director-General of the Directorate General of Education in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, and Dr Thuraya bint Hamad al Rashidiyah, Director General of the Directorate of Special Education and Continuing Learning were present.


The event aims to involve the community in serving this group and educate the community on the International Day of the Disabled.


The ceremony began with the National Anthem in sign language, performed by students of audio integration from Hafsa Bint Omar School for Basic Education and Al Maamoura School for Basic Education.


This was followed by reciting of Holy Quran by Mohammed Awlad Wadir, a 12 grade student of audio integration at Sultan Bin Saif School for Basic Education, and welcome performance by Ahed Al Nahda School for Basic Education students.


Faisal bin Said bin Khalid al Hinai, Director of the Department of Special Education and Continuing Learning, in a speech said: “Our celebration of the International Day of Disability is a remind about caring important group of society. We must motivate them to overcome their disability and integrate them into mainstream society as they represent 15 per cent of the world’s population with various disabilities. Based on that, this Directorate, represented by the Department of Special Education and Continuous Learning, strives to integrate this group into society. Here, the biggest role lies with the general public, who must be very careful in dealing with this group and not make them feel that they are different from the rest of society for any reason, as their disability is beyond their control and ability.”


This Directorate has been and is still making tremendous efforts to serve this segment of society. “


Al Hinai concluded his speech: “In line with Oman’s Vision 2040, which believes that the human capital is the greatest wealth of society, this directorate works to develop plans and strategies that will help the disabled to engage in community life and contribute to building it, invest their capabilities and talents and strengthening their productivity. This is one of their rights, and there is no doubt that it is an effort that yield results, as shown by the statistical indicators.”

During the celebration, student Jassim al Azwani, from Musab bin Omair School for Basic Education, presented a poem. After that, Dr Nasser bin Mohammed al Aufi, a senior educational researcher, gave a presentation on “The Vocational Empowerment Project in Improving the Quality of Life for Persons with Mental Disabilities.” In it, he talked about the importance of the Tamkeen project, funded by Sultan Qaboos University and with the full cooperation of the Department of Special Education and Continuing Learning. This project has yielded successes and good results, which will be a good omen for serving the disabled.


After that, Sultan Bin Saif School for Basic Education students presented a silent theatrical sketch.


The celebration also included the opening of the exhibition of the vocational empowerment project and student talents. The attendees of the ceremony toured the exhibition. Shaima bint Masoud al Hataliyah of Zainab Bint Ali School for Basic Education, presented her pottery skills while Hazaa al Shuraiqi of Mohammad bin Jaafar School for Basic Education drew pictures with mouth. The students of Hafsa Bint Omar School for Basic Education and the student Taif al Shukaili, from Amna Bint Al Arqam School for Basic Education presented their paintings. Audio integration students at Sultan Bin Saif School for Basic Education also gave a presentation on content creation. Laia bint Salim al Salmiyah presented her skills in the field of photography.


The ceremony concluded by honouring the supporters and sponsors for holding this celebration.
