New OCCI members gear up to elect chairman

MUSCAT: The newly elected members of the Board of Directors (BoD) of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) gathered at OCCI headquarters on Thursday to prepare for the election of the chairman and two deputies for 2022-2026.


At the election held on Tuesday, 21 members were elected from 125 contestants. As many as 15,000 voters cast their ballots to the elections that saw an expat was also elected to the BoD for the first time in the history.


The members were also requested to present their future plans and visions in managing the Chamber's business for the said period at the Chamber's headquarters, by the Main Committee for the elections of the OCCI.


The Election Committee had invited candidates to participate in the introductory meetings organised immediately after the election results were announced.


"These meetings are a new electoral practice in the history of the Chamber that allows candidates to present their electoral programmes and future visions to develop the work of the Chamber," said Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Under-Secretary for Commerce and Industry at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), and Chairman of the Main Committee for the elections of the OCCI.


The elections were considered to be very crucial for the OCCI especially after the Royal Decree 56/2022 which stipulated to increase the number of members of the BoD from 15 to 21.
