NIZWA: Coinciding with the celebration of Omani Tree Day, the Environment Authority in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate started implementing the third phase of the project to take stock and document the perennial wild trees in the governorate.

This phase of the project includes installing metal plates on some of the perennial wild trees in the wilayats of Nizwa, Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and Manah.

The project's main aim is to educate the community and visitors to the Sultanate of Oman on these trees' environmental, economic and social importance. The project also aims to spread the culture of planting local trees while preserving the existing ones and warning against encroachment on them. It also aims to identify the perennial trees in the governorate and their geographical distribution by putting GIS tags with details of the circumference of the trunk, height and general status of the tree.

Perennial wild trees are an essential source of seeds for several local species, which are included in the national initiative to plant 10 million trees. In addition to its benefits like absorbing carbon dioxide, trapping dust, it provides food and shelter for many organisms. The project will also promote ways of acquiring knowledge using modern technical means.

The Environment Authority in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate started implementing this project in April and plans to complete the documentation of perennial wild trees in the rest of the governorate's wilayats soon.

As part of the Omani Tree Day event and within the national initiative to plant ten million trees, the administration, in cooperation with the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates "Madayn Oman," planted 600 seedlings in the industrial city of Nizwa. They planted Ghaf, Sidr, Samar, and some ornamental trees. The initiative aims to preserve the environment and its natural resources.
