Oman grouped with Qatar, Lebanon in WAFF U-23 tourney

Oman are clubbed with Qatar and Lebanon in Group A at the third edition of West Asian U-23 Championship which will be held in Saudi Arabia during November 3 to 15.


Hosts Saudi Arabia headed Group B which also featured Bahrain and Syria teams. The six participating teams were divided into two groups. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals and the winners in semifinals will compete for the title while the losers will play the third and fourth play-off fixture.


Oman will begin their campaign with a match against Lebanon on November 6 while they will meet Qatar in the second match on November 9. On the opening day, Qatar will face off Lebanon while Bahrain will take on Syria. Saudi Arabia will kick off their opening match against Syria on November 6 while they will play against Bahrain on November 9. The semifinal fixtures are scheduled to take place on November 12 while the concluding match and third and fourth play-off match will be held on November 15.


The national Olympic (U-23) team’s last appearance was in September as they concluded an aboard preparatory camp in the UAE. The team, coached by national coach Akram Habreesh had played two friendly matches against UAE. Both matches ended in draws as the first preparatory encounter concluded at 1-1 while the second warm-up match finished at 2-2.


The external camp was part of the team’s forthcoming assignment including West Asian U-23 Championship in Saudi Arabia, GCC Gulf football Championship for U-23, AFC Asian U-23 qualifiers which acts as qualifiers for 2024 Paris Olympic Games.


Groupings:


Group A: Oman, Qatar, Lebanon


Group B: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Syria
