MUSCAT: HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, presided over a ceremony organised by Women’s Club for Sports and Cultural Creativity to mark Omani Women’s Day. He also inducted the club’s identity.

“Omani women proved their efficiency in many areas and acted as basic partners in the country’s march of prosperity over the past years of the renaissance as desired by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik,” said HH Sayyid Theyazin in a statement. He noted that His Majesty the Sultan affirmed that “citizen’s partnership in building Oman’s present and future constitutes a basic pillar of national action”.

HH Sayyid Theyazin added that the inauguration of the Women's Club for Sports and Cultural Creativity is a clear indication of the Royal care and attention accorded to women by His Majesty the Sultan. The event signals a renewed call for women to efficiently play their role alongside men and to keep pace with the requirements of this era, while at the same time taking pride in their identity and their ability to innovate and excel wherever they might be.

At the outset of the ceremony, HH Sayyid Theyazin toured an exhibition marking the occasion. He took note of samples of Omani women’s accomplishments in various fields of sports, culture and youth.

Meanwhile, Sayyidah Sana bint Hamad al Busaidiyah, President of the Club, said that Omani women have enjoyed lofty status since the dawn of the blessed Renaissance. This attention, she added, enabled women to shine as partners to domestic development. The designation of “Omani Women’s Day” is yet another manifestation and celebration of women’s role and a reaffirmation of their high prestige, said Sayyidah Sana.

The club is considered the first women’s institution of its kind aimed to enhance women’s contribution to various aspects of cultural, sports and youth action. She added that the club would empower women to carry out social roles more competently and confidently, she added.

Later, HH Sayyid Theyazin launched the club’s identity, indicating the design of an index finger ring - being a symbol of leadership and a reflection of the new club’s values of confidence, progress and social traditions.

The identity also underscores the role played by women in the country's development, gaining inspiration from their history and their own vision to build the future.

A Women’s Symposium for Sports and Cultural Creativity is being held to mark the occasion. Besides highlighting women’s specialisations and goals, the symposium sheds light on the accomplishments that gave rise to women’s presence in sports and cultural arenas.

The two-day symposium will have two sessions, the first deals with the stage of establishment of the club. The second reviews women’s sports and cultural activities at GCC and Arab levels. It highlights the experiences of similar clubs in Kuwait and Morocco.

The symposium will continue on Thursday with two sessions. The first session will deal with “joint work and integration of roles” and the second will focus on the development of sports and cultural action. It also contemplates women's presence in the cultural sector. -- ONA
