

MUSCAT: In coincidence with the World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10 each year, the Oil and Gas Sector Trade Union in collaboration with the General Federation of Oman Trade Unions, held a seminar on the risks of addiction and mental disorders, on Monday.
The seminar was held in coordination with Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL) and the Ministry of Health under the auspices of Shaikh Nasr bin Amer al Hosni, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, at Al Masarra Hospital.
Said bin Ahmed al Mahrouqi, Chairman of Oil and Gas Sector Trade Union delivered a speech in which he said: “Working in the oil and gas sector can be one of the principal options for many people due to the exceptional advantages provided to workers in the sector. However, the oil and gas sector has many challenges and risks including the safety of workers and protecting them from various risks in the workplace. Besides, there is the risks of addiction and psychological pressures,”
He added: “This seminar aims to create a society fully aware of the importance of mental health and of the notion that it is everyone’s responsibility. Our aim is to protect the workers from health hazards within the concession areas. We hope to form a joint team comprising specialists in the field of occupational safety and health and specialized lecturers at the Ministry of Health to devise an action plan to implement a joint awareness campaign for workers in the sector.”
