Renowned mathematicians from ten countries with a high scientific caliber are gathering in a two-day international event ‘Constitute a Network of Women Mathematicians in South Asian and Middle Eastern Region’ on October 4 and 5 in Suhar.

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences-Suhar is hosting the event in association with Community of Women in Mathematics, International Mathematical Union.

The event follows the winning of the university faculty member the CWM-2022 (International Mathematics Union) funding call by Dr Deepti Thakur (pictured), Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the UTAS, Suhar.

The first day event will a hybrid event, while the second day will continue in virtual mode.

The aim of this hybrid event is to provide an opportunity to constitute a network of women mathematicians in the South Asian and Middle Eastern regions to collaborate in their future research work and career opportunities available in Mathematics.

Renowned mathematicians from ten countries with a high scientific caliber are participating in this prestigious event. Six countries CWM ambassadors, Dr Neena Gupta Ramanujan prize winner (2021) and Dr Magda Talib al Hinai, Chair of Oman Mathematics Committee are part of this initiative.

The result of CWM-IMU 2022 annual funding call was declared and is now available in the IMU website. In 2022, CWM received 31 applications worldwide of which CWM decided to support 10 projects.

The project proposal submitted by Dr Deepti to CWM 2022 Funding was accepted unanimously by CWM-IMU. This is the first time that any faculty from the Universities of Oman received funding from CWM-an International Mathematical Union entity.

The project that was proposed by Dr Deepti is to Constitute a Network of Women Mathematicians in South Asian and Middle Eastern Region.

“I felt inspired, motivated, satisfied and looking forward to explore further in the field of Mathematics,” Dr Deepti said.

The CWM is the committee of the International Mathematical Union whose main objectives are to propose, encourage and facilitate activities of the IMU or other bodies, which would tend to increase the visibility of women in mathematics and lead to an increase in their representation in the community at all levels and in all parts of the world.

When asked about the status of women in Mathematics, she said, “ Women are doing well in mathematics, Maryam Mirzakhani, a field medalist and most recently, Dr Neena Gupta was awarded Ramanujan prize in Mathematics and Maryna Viazovska, who works on the geometry of spheres, is one of the four winners of the prestigious fields medal this year. There is a good percentage of female students in higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman,” she noted.

CWM promotes international contacts between national and regional organisations for women in mathematics, facilitating the building of networks at the regional or continental level. It also provides a website which is a repository of information for and about women in mathematics worldwide and to enable efficient communication among the international community of women mathematicians.
