Muscat: With a mission to establish a comprehensive national strategy and a unified operational plan towards achieving net zero emissions, Carbon Management Lab (CML) kicked off here on Monday to keep pace with the development goals within Oman Vision 2040.
The CML, which runs till October 13, 2022, seeks to boost Oman’s strategic approach to the environment. It is organized by Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit, under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in cooperation with the Environment Authority and the Civil Aviation Authority.
The overall objective is to build effective, balanced and resilient ecosystems to protect the environment, maintain the sustainability of natural resources and enhance the national economy.
The CML is also held in preparation for Oman’s participation in the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to be held in the Arab Republic of Egypt in November 2022.
Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the CML, pointed out that the file of climate change and carbon emissions is strongly present in most international forums and conferences.
Al Aufi added that redoubling efforts is involved in achieving zero emissions for many reasons, including the current global rise in energy prices, which prompted some countries to revert to the use of coal as an alternative source of energy.
The CML will focus on four main sectors, which, he said are the energy sector (electricity, oil and gas), the industry sector, the transport sector, the cities and buildings sector.
All parties concerned will update their plans, strategies and policies and define regulatory frameworks, based on the initiatives and projects emanating from the CML. They will set targets, emissions measurement mechanism, follow-up methods and envisioned projects to achieve the net zero objective.
