Muscat: An 18-year-old student has developed a prototype of a car that runs on hydrogen produced from water. Boutaina Boujrada, a student of University of Technology and Applied Sciences, said, "With the support of the teaching staff and my family, I found myself stuck in science and discovery. I delved more and more into hydrogen fuel especially, and how to add it to vehicle engines."

"There were shortcomings in the hydrogen cars produced in the world, and they are all dependent on hydrogen fuel stations to charge their batteries, so they are not self-producing hydrogen. My idea was to address this shortcoming and create a car that works on hydrogen only once it is filled with water. I called it the "water wheels' car," she said.

The idea for this car came while researching topics related to renewable energies. Today, the project has become realistic and is still scalable to increase the car's efficiency with the highest possible capacity.

Boutaina is a source of encouragement for young students to work hard and innovate. She called on the Omani youth to make more efforts to build this country.

A solar energy system powers the process of working for this type of car to separate the components of water into hydrogen and oxygen. Water, which makes up 70 per cent of the earth, is an excellent source of hydrogen. So water instead of hydrogen will be a better resource.

This car is completely clean and workable. It has been tested through a small car, and it worked. The car is still scalable, and the work on weight of the car and efficiency increase to cross the 350 km barrier is going on.
