Muscat: Dr Abdullah Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, held a meeting on Monday with German experts from the UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme, currently visiting the Sultanate of Oman.

The meeting discussed the possibility of drafting files for nominating the Omani nature reserves of “Al Jabal Al Akhadhar Sanctuary” and “Jabal Samhan Sanctuary” to the MAB programme. It reviewed various aspects of cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the UNESCO, laying emphasis on Oman’s efforts in the field of environment protection.

The two sanctuaries boast vast variety in environmental and ecological systems, in addition to unique natural scenery and human, material and cultural heritage.

MAB programme is the best means of developing national strategies for sustainable development of nature reserves. Germany has institutions with established experience in enhancing MAB nature reserves.
