A Taliban delegation led by their Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi left Kabul on Sunday to attend an international conference on Afghanistan in the Uzbek capital Tashkent, the de facto authorities announced.

Uzbekistan, which has developed close diplomatic relations with the Taliban in Kabul, is hosting the two-day conference that will open on Monday with participants from over 20 countries and international organisations.

The meeting will be a follow-up to two other international conferences held in the Central Asian country in 2018 and 2021 with a focus on the Afghan peace process, security cooperation and regional connectivity, the Uzbek foreign ministry said in a statement last month.

With the chaotic withdrawal of the international forces last August, the previous Afghan government collapsed and the Taliban took full control of the country reimposing their hardliner views on the suffering nation.

The attendance of a Taliban delegation at the meeting has already sparked reactions from rights activists. "This is shameful," Amnesty International Afghan campaigner Samira Hamidi said.
