Pakistani authorities said that at least 77 people have died in rain-related incidents as heavy monsoon downpours wreaked havoc across the country. "At least 77 people, including children, lost their lives during the monsoon season that began on June 14'', Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman told the media on Wednesday. "The rains across Pakistan are 87 per cent more than the average...'', she said. The minister said that south-western province of Balochistan was adversely hit by the heavy rains and 39 people had lost their lives.
During the last 24 hours, over a dozen people had died in rain-related incidents in Balochistan. The majority of deaths took place in the provincial capital Quetta due to urban flooding, according to Younis Aziz Mengal, a spokesperson for the provincial disaster management authority. Mengal said that more than 300 houses have been damaged by rains. — dpa
