Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen argued that his advanced age made him suitable for re-election, as part of his campaign efforts for this year's presidential election. "I'm old enough for this office'', the 78-year-old incumbent said in Vienna. He pointed to experience as an important qualification for the job during restless and difficult times. Van der Bellen recalled the Ibiza affair in which senior members of Austria's right-wing populist Freedom Party (FPÖ) were filmed discussing illicit dealings to benefit the party. He also referred to the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, adding that this phase of unrest could not be expected to end soon. Van der Bellen called on Austrians to defend democracy. "Beware of all those who have simple recipes'', he said. — dpa
