The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Center for Competition Protection and Monopoly Prevention at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), will host on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, the 3rd Arab Competition Forum in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).

The two-day forum will take place at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre Center under the auspices of Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidi, Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ). Also in attendance will be the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.

Taking part in the deliberations will be a number of experts and specialists from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the League of Arab States, the International Trade Center, and various competition authorities from around the globe.

Their participation will contribute to improving economic growth and governance in the Arab region in line with the sustainable development goals, strengthening cooperation and coordination between competition authorities in ESCWA member states, and guiding competition policy-making and enforcement in the Arab region, guided by international best practices.

The 3rd Arab Region Competition Forum serves as an annual platform to share knowledge about competition policy and its enforcement for Arab stakeholders. The forum will build on the momentum of the first and second forums. During the two-day event, competition authorities, government officials, experts and academics will discuss ways forward in competition policy. Competition authorities from the Member States will also benefit from the best practices offered by their counterparts from different countries.

A distinguished set of speakers will present on international best practices in the field of competition protection, anti-competition laws and policies in the Arab region, strategies and recommendations, and joint action plans to confront cross-border monopolistic practices. Participants will also explore concerted efforts to promote competition policies within the framework of joint Arab economic cooperation and integration.

Back in 2020, ESCWA, in partnership with the UNCTAD and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched the 1st Arab Region Competition Forum, with the aim of creating an annual platform for knowledge exchange on competition policy and its enforcement for Arab stakeholders, and to enhance knowledge and engage parties from Arab countries as well as building capacity on best practices in competition across the region, the Forum provides a common platform for dialogue and to facilitate coordination and cooperation on competition at the national and regional levels.
