MUSCAT: Oman justified their top billing to set up a title-clash with Bangladesh in the final of the 2022 Asian Games hockey qualifiers in Thailand capital of Bangkok on Saturday.

The final will be held on Sunday.

In the first semifinal, Oman blanked Indonesia 2-0 in an evenly contested encounter.

After a barren first-half, Oman opened the account when Sami al Laun found the target from a penalty corner in the 37th minute.

Indonesia made valiant efforts to pull one back but their efforts ended at the strong Oman defence and goalkeeper. The opponents failed to convert the penalty corners that came their way.

Oman sealed the final spot with a brilliant field goal from Mubarak al Qasmi in the 51st minute.

Oman successfully weathered some counter attacks in the last ten minutes to keep the score intact.

BANGLADESH PREVAIL

In the second semifinal, Bangladesh outsmarted hosts Thailand 4-1.

The Thais stunned the Tigers when Chanachol Rungniyom slotted in a field goal in the 10th minute.

Bangladesh sprang into action after the goal and Roman Sarkar hit the equaliser in the 22nd minute through a field goal.

Ashraful Islam made it 2-1 as Bangladesh took the lead against the hosts one minute before the half-time break.

The story was not different in the third quarter as Islam converted another penalty corner in the 35th minute as Bangladesh consolidated position with a 3-1 lead.

Mohammed Rakibul struck in the 47th minute to complete the scoreline with a field goal.

The Thai players could not capitalise on the opportunities in the last 10 minutes as Bangladesh booked the final with a 4-1 score.

All the semifinalists have qualified for the finals of Hangzhou Asian Games 2022.

In the fifth to eighth position matches earlier, Uzbekistan beat Singapore 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw at full time and Sri Lanka thrashed Hong Kong 5-2. With the result, Sri Lanka qualified for the Asian Games finals.
