Prisoners help extinguish forest fires in Siberia

Prisoners and guards from the local prison in the village of Gromadsk, in the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk, have been called out to extinguish forest fires. Their help was necessary because fire brigade was overwhelmed, the TV station NTW reported. According to official reports, a total of about 1,000 hectares of forest and steppe were on fire in Krasnoyarsk, eastern Russia. Several villages have already been destroyed, while seven people have been reported dead in the region so far. More and more regions in Siberia are reporting the spread of severe forest fires.


In Irkutsk on Lake Baikal, a total of 13 fires raged over an area of around 700 hectares, the Interfax news agency reported on Sunday,citing the governor of the region, Igor Kobsev. - dpa
