Shawwal crescent sighted, today is first day of Eid

MUSCAT: The main committee for sighting the crescent of Shawwal for year 1443 AH held a meeting on Sunday under the chairmanship of Shaikh Abdullah bin Mohammed al Salmy, Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs.


The meeting was attended by the committee members: His Eminence Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad al Khalili, Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman; Engineer Khalid bin Hilal al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Interior; Dr Mohammed bin Said al Maamari, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs; Shaikh Mohammed bin Salim al Akhzami, supreme court judge; Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulsatar al Kamali, head of appellate court in Musandam Governorate; Shaikh Mohammed bin Salim al Nahdi, judge at appellate court in Muscat Governorate.


The committee said that the reports it has received on Sunday evening confirm the sighting of the crescent of Shawwal. Hence, today (Monday) will be the first day of the month of Shawwal and the first day of Eid al Fitr for the year 1443 AH.


The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs extended sincere greetings to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, praying for many returns of this blessed occasion while he enjoys good health, happiness and long life wishing Oman superiority and prosperity and the Arab and Muslim nations blessing and bounties. — ONA
