The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has said it is possible to renew the driving licence online as part of the efforts to digitise all the services as per the Oman Vision 2040.

It may be noted that last week, ROP said that the transfer of ownership of vehicles that are less than 10 years old could be done through the website and smartphone application.

Even the 'learner's book' required for driving classes can be renewed online or via a mobile app.

The process of renewing vehicle registrations has been in place for some time now.

According to details available with the Observer, to be able to renew a driver's licence online, both citizens and residents must meet some conditions, which include activating the online authentication feature of civil status cards as well as PKI activation of SIM cards.

The licence must be issued by the ROP and the licence must have expired or is about to expire in less than 30 days.

The licence holder must be in the Sultanate of Oman at the time of renewal, and the licence holder must be free from violations and fines.

Other conditions are that eye examinations must be conducted at centres approved by the Royal Oman Police, which will be sent online to the system.

The eye examination results have a validity of 30 days.

Oman has been ranked among the top Arab countries with highly developed electronic governance systems, according to the United Nations.

Oman moved upwards from the list of developed countries in the field of e-government to the list of very developed countries during the period between the issuance of the reports in 2018 and 2020.
