The dream of many citizens and expatriates who were charged with minor financial offences, to share an Iftar with their families will soon come true as the Royal gesture of His Highness Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said to support the “Fak Kurba” initiative to release such people was announced on Thursday.

“Emphasising the importance of charitable work in restoring hope to the insolvent and their families, HH Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said contributed to the release of a number of imprisoned persons within Fak Kurba initiative in the various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman,” Fak Kurba said in a statement.

His Highness' announcement comes just a day after Her Highness the Honourable Lady Assayida Ahd Abdullah Hamed al Busaidi, Spouse of the Sultan of Oman, showed Royal gesture to support the Fak Kurba initiative to help the release of people imprisoned for minor financial offences.

The Royal gesture came out of her social responsibility to support humanitarian initiatives, and her belief in the role of charitable work in serving society through the initiatives adopted by civil society institutions via Ahd Foundation.

"We are immensely happy to note that our works are recognised by the nation and the Royal family and this gives much impetus for us to go forward extending help to more people," Dr Mohammed al Zadjali, a Chairman of Omani Lawyers Association, told the Observer.

The Fak Kurba initiative, a programme of the Oman Lawyers Association to help those who inadvertently fall in financial claims in all governorates, has been helping many over the past decade.

The Royal support, gestured to the Oman Lawyers Association, is expected to bring in relief to many more families whose member is caught in some financial issues, according to Dr Al Zadjali.

Usually run during the holy month of Ramadhan, the Fak Kurba, currently in its 9th edition, was key in getting the release of 749 prisoners of different nationalities who were held guilty for minor financial offences from 39 courts in 2021.

Most of them were charged with dishonour of cheques and were released as part of the Fak Kurba initiative which was launched on April 1, 2021 and ran until May 31, 2021 during Ramadhan.
