MUSCAT, MARCH 21

Sanaa al Shekaili, first Omani racer from the GCC to participate in the 2020 Middle East Rally Championship, claimed the third place at the Saudi Arabia’s Rally Jameel, which saw a global participation of 68 women rally drivers from March 17 to 19.

Saudi national Dania Akeel bagged the top honours while US-based racer Sedona Blinson came second in the race that saw 34 teams from 15 countries showing their mettle.

Speaking to the Observer from Barka, Sanaa said, it was her undying passion complemented by the relentless support from her family, friends and the Oman Automobile Association that made her come with flying colours.

“Rally Jameel is my chance to renew the love I’ve had of challenges since my childhood, especially in the field of motor racing, where I have the ability to challenge myself and the other competitors in this distinguished GCC women-only event,”, a jubilant Sanaa said.

The open-to-all navigational rally, which was not designed as a speed test, was held in the north-central city of Hail, taking in the sites of Al Qassim city and then heading to the capital, Riyadh, via hidden checkpoints and challenges.

“This is very exciting to participate in. As well as empowering Omani women in the world of car racing and rallying, it is also showcasing Omani women in this field on the international stage,” Sanaa, who also established the first women’s car club in Oman, added.

Dania Akeel, who was the first Saudi to participate in the Dakar Rally in 2022 is a well-renowned figure in the regional motorsport scene.

“Rally Jameel inspires a sense of adventure and discovery. This rally will support the increasing number of women on the road to become comfortable behind the wheel and experience driving in a completely different way to driving on the road,” Sanaa said.

US-based competitor Sedona Blinson has previously participated in Rally Jameel’s inspiration, the Rebelle Rally.

While teams from both the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman represented the GCC, 22 teams from Saudi, representing both Riyadh and Jeddah underlined their presence from the host country and some from Egypt and elsewhere represented their countries.
