The Sultanate of Oman is making excellent strides in embracing green energy resources as an alternative to Oil & Gas in line with an ambitious strategy to decarbonise key sectors of the economy, according to a high-level official.

Dr Amer al Hinai, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies & Research, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), said: ”We are in the right direction! As a country we are depending on Oil & Gas, but that does not mean we will not use the green energy. Green hydrogen is also an alternative that can replace hydrocarbons'', he stated, citing in this regards plans for the development of zero-carbon hydrogen in multiple locations using solar and wind energy.

Speaking to the Observer on the sidelines of the Oman Sustainability Week, which concluded last week, Dr Al Hinai noted that the switch to renewables is well under way. “In the Sultanate of Oman, we have already started in the solar and wind energy space. Accordingly, we will not build more stations dependent on gas -- what we have is enough. All the new demands will depend on green energy.”

Various speakers at OSW 2022 referenced Oman’s ambitious plan to diversify energy sources by expanding renewable energy projects, in a way that benefits the environment and reduces carbon emissions. Towards this goal, efforts are also in progress to develop and implement studies, plans and policies to ensure optimum use of energy and to pay attention to the development of renewable energy projects in various regions, to support economic diversification plans and promote sustainable energy.

The speakers explained the importance of alternative energy or green energy as it is called, since the concerns and challenges posed are shared by the world and not any specific country. Collective action is the main means of success in this field, and in most countries of the world, alternative energy is the most popular due to its ease and unlimited sustainability, they stressed.
