MUSCAT, Oman’s men’s team is in fifth place currently behind the UAE and Oman's under-18 team is in second place behind the UAE in the GCC Golf Championship in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

“They have pretty much battled their way today and has got some good scores. They have got good experience today so hopefully, we get good results tomorrow and keep on the process,” said Peter Bailey reflecting on the first day’s performance.

The players in the 24th edition of GCC Golf Championship Men’s Division has 72 hole, four-round event finishing on Thursday while the 13th Junior GCC Championship has 54 holes with three rounds over three days on Monday through Wednesday.

Speaking to Observer, Peter Bailey, Oman team manager said, “The team is all in good spirits after their arrival and preparations at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Everyone is looking forward to the next few days, competing among friends from the other GCC nations. The course is playing nicely and the setup is fair for all the competitors.”

He said hopefully the experience of the men’s team and the U18s will help to inspire the younger national team players who should be playing later this year in the same event.

“There are aspiring young players who look up to the older players and the more experience they all get, and the more interest there is shown, the better for all of golf in the Sultanate of Oman and the future of our youth,” Bailey noted adding, “We are very fortunate to be supported by our kind sponsor - Mohsin Haider Darwish, Infrastructure, Technology, Industrial and Consumer Solutions. Whose support is invaluable for this exciting event.”

Golf player Mohammed al Busaidy said he really enjoyed the atmosphere at Abu Dhabi National golf course, a world-class course with lots to offer.

“I am really excited to represent my country and play for my team. It has been a while since we traveled together because of the Covid restrictions. Now that we are here, we are all really thankful and looking forward to the challenge,” said Mohammed al Busaidy.
