GGI organises 5x5 basketball tournament

MUSCAT: The Grand Global Investment (GGI) Company is holding a 5x5 basketball tournament with the participation of 18 elite teams from the Filipino community.


The tournament, being held in cooperation with the Oman Basketball Association, began on January 21 and will continue till March end.


The tournament was inaugurated by Dr Mohammad bin Humaid al Alawi, Director of Financial and Administrative Affairs at Jalan Bani Bu Ali Hospital, in presence of Ali Humaid al Alawi, Chairman of GGI, and Manuel Allan Minoza, general supervisor of the tournament.


Chief organizer of the tournament, Ali al Alawi said the tournament comes as part of Grand Global Investment Company’s social responsibility programmes.


“The Grand Global Investment Company wants to promote healthy lifestyle habits among the citizens and the residents by organizing various sports activities.”


“The basketball tournament aims to promote the game in association with the Oman Basketball Association. We are also promoting the game by live broadcasting of international basketball tournaments in tie-up with world basketball body FIBA on the company’s website and social media platforms,” Al Alawi said.



“Through these social responsibility initiatives by encouraging basketball for citizens and residents in the Sultanate, we aim to contribute in raising the standard of Oman national teams internationally and develop quality basketball players as well.”


“More than 10 national and Filipino teams participated in our competition, which was supervised by the technical expert of the Oman Basketball Association and the general supervisor of the tournament, Allan Minoza,” the GGI chief added.


During the pandemic period also, GGI organized a 3x3 basketball tournament on February 26, 2021 for citizens and the Filipino community, supporting the participating teams and related people in the difficult times.


From January to February 2020, the company held a football tournament for Omanis, in which six sports teams participated, including the junior, youth and Olympic teams of the Fulaij club and youth teams of the Al Wahda Sports Club in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali. They were divided into two groups, and more than 100 players participated in the tournament.
