Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and the Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO) have signed an agreement to finance the project on indoor vertical farming technology to produce leafy vegetables.

The signing of this agreement comes within the framework of the efforts made by the ministry to improve food security.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser al Bakri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed al Fannah al Araimi, Director of Sustainability and Institutional Communication, OMIFCO.

Under this indoor system, light, temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentrations necessary for plant growth are artificially controlled, and plants are grown vertically instead of horizontally as in traditional greenhouses.

The system will enable the farmer to have stable cultivation and produce vegetables throughout the year.

The vertical farming project will also contribute to saving between 40-60 percent of water and fertilizer consumption compared to regular systems.
