71 juvenile delinquency cases in 3 months

Muscat: The number of juvenile delinquency cases were referred to the Public Prosecution in three months in various governorates was 71, which included 37 Omanis (35 males, two females), and 34 non-Omanis (32 males and two females)


Most cases were reported from North al Batinah Governorate (27), followed by Dhofar (19), South al Batinah and Al Dakhiliyah (6 ), Muscat and Al Buraimi (4), North al Sharqiyah 3, South al Sharqiyah and Al Dhahirah (one each). No cases were recorded in Musandam and Al Wusta.


The report published by the Oman newspaper quoted the Ministry of Social Development and said 71 cases were referred to the Public Prosecution and six cases were sent to rehabilitation.


Juvenile delinquents are children in the age group of nine and 17 who have committed an act punishable by law, while aftercare (rehabilitation) is the support services provided to them in order to integrate them into society.


The report confirmed that the total number of juveniles present in the juvenile rehabilitation home is seven (all males in the age group 15-18 years). A juvenile rehabilitation home offers shelter and corrective measures as per the orders of the court. The Juvenile Police are responsible for maintaining the security of these homes.


Among the violations listed are the cases of misdemeanor, assault, theft, one case of illegal exit from the Sultanate of Oman and a case of violation of the decisions of the Supreme Committee, traffic law violations, violations of the information technology law, violations of the Residence Law, smuggling, vandalism, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, violence against a child, and homicide.
