A joint committee is studying matters related to the revision of minimum wages. This was stated by the government last week.

Dr Mahad bin Said bin Ali Baowain, Minister of Labour, said in an interview with Oman TV, that there was no link between working in the private sector and the opportunity to compete for jobs in the government sector.

“The ministry is currently working in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to identify some specialisations that will cater to the needs of the job market.”

The minister added that the number of male and female job-seekers are almost the same as per the data available. “Women have been taking up jobs, but there are some factors that may control the presence of women in the market, including the nature of work, supply and demand.”

He said that the ministry is focusing on specialised, technical, intermediate and higher professions that have been preferred by youngsters.

“We are currently working in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to qualify some specialisations to enter the labour market in the educational field.”

The Ministry of Labour has also been working on the new labour laws, one for the civil service and another for the private sector.

The Public Employment Law relates to the employees in the government sector, while the Labour Law regulates the relationship between the workers and employers in the private sector. However, there are common points between the two laws that serve all employees in both sectors.

The civil service law is expected to be balanced, flexible, and positive in favour of the employee. It consists of only 40 articles, denying that there will be an increase in working hours and the link between spouses’ bonuses in government employment.
