Muscat: The Oman University Sports Committee (OUSC) has unveiled the sporting events for 2022. Athletics, cross country, swimming and volleyball are the top domestic championships which will take place in the existing year. OUSC Chairman Dr Salim al Oraimi, recently met the representatives of sports sections in the national universities and colleges in presence of OUSC board members.

The OUSC officials requested all the university and college students to take part in the domestic sporting events. The top winners in each sport will represent the Sultanate of Oman University team in the Summer World University Game which will take place in China from June 26 to July 7, 2022 and the Arabian Universad Games in Abu Dhabi.

During the meeting at the National University of Science and Technology, Al Oraimi highlighted on the championships and tournaments which took place in 2021. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, the OUSC managed to organise different sporting events under implementation of strict medical protocol to ensure the safety of the athletes and participants. Table Tennis tournament, badminton, athletics, women's futsal and other remote training courses were the top events held in the previous year.

The year 2022 will begin with the athletics championship and then the cross country tournament. The swimming championship will be followed while Volleyball open championship will take place later this year for both genders. Beach volleyball is another planned event for this year besides basketball 3X3 and chess tournaments.

“We would like to see the participation of many students in all the 2022 sporting events. Attendance of good number of students will give better options for the coaching staff to select the top faces to form the national team. The last two years registered less activities and events due to the pandemic impact. Despite Covid-19 challenges, many events and courses were organised under tight medical protocol. We hope all the students will take part in the 2022 sporting activities,” the chief of OUSC said.

The Sultanate of Oman represented by OUSC will host the FISU World University Cross Country Championships in 2024 in coordination with the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
