MUSCAT: The election committee overseeing the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) elections has announced the initial list of candidates for the 2020-2024 term of the board of directors of the OOC, at a meeting held at the OOC premises on Tuesday.
The initial list comprised 15 candidates including Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair who submitted his nomination papers for the position of chairman.
Incumbent OOC Chairman Sayyid Khalid al Busaidy has not filed his nomination.
HH Sayyid Azzan bin Qais al Said will run for vice-chairman post.
The OOC board elections will be held on February 28.
Seven candidates representing sports associations affiliated to international sports associations are vying for the membership of the OOC board of directors namely: Saif bin Sabaa al Rashidi, Chairman of Oman Cycling Association (OCA), Abdullah bin Mohammed Bamakhalif, Chairman of Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA), Engineer Khalfan bin Saleh al Naabi, Chairman of Oman Basketball Association (OBA), Dr Marwan bin Jumaa al Jumma, Chairman of Oman Hockey Association (OHA), Dr Said bin Ahmed al Shehri, Chairman of Oman Handball Association (OHA), Engineer Ibrahim bin Abdullah al Maqbali, Chairman of Oman Volleyball Association (OVA) and Mohsen bin Hamad al Masrouri, Vice-chairman of Oman Football Association (OFA).
The candidates for the membership of the OOC include Taha bin Sulaiman al Kishri, member of the International Swimming Federation, Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Chairman of Oman School Sports Association.
Sports personalities Qais bin Saud al Zakwani and Dr Fareed bin Khamis al Zadjali along with women sports administrators Saada bint Salim al Ismailiyah, Lujaina bint Mohsim al Zaabiyah are other names in the frame.
At its meeting held on December 27, 2021, the OOC general assembly set February 28 as the date of elections of the OOC board of directors.
