A programme to train Omanis in the field of driving heavy trucks has been launched recently. The programme, by the Esnad Institute, will help qualify Omani cadres and develop their capabilities as heavy truck drivers to meet the needs of the labor market in the land transport sector.

The programme includes tests on the road over a period of six months for the target age group of 21 years to 45 years.

In a statement, Abdullah bin Yaqoub al Rahbi of Esnad Institute for Training Truck Drivers and Equipment, said the programme seeks to bring the trainees to the profession of driving heavy trucks and familiarise them with the rules, precautionary measures related to the maintenance of the truck, and other technical aspects such as changing tryes and using fire extinguishers. Drivers are also responsible for the safe delivery of goods that are loaded in the trucks.

The Ministry of Labour, which has been making efforts to regulate the profession of drivers, earlier this year announced that driving of fuel vehicles, agricultural materials, and foodstuffs, will be restricted to Omanis.
