MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman is currently witnessing the falling of Geminid meteor showers that will reach peak on Monday night and Tuesday dawn.

Astronomy observer Ibrahim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, a member of the Omani Astronomical Society said that the month of December will witness a number of astronomical events including the Geminid meteor showers which fall from a point in the constellation Gemini, hence the name Geminids.

He explained that the year 2021 is not ideal for observing the Geminid meteor due to the presence of the humpback moon in the sky’s dome coinciding with its peak activity which will cause the obliteration of most of the faint meteors. However, Geminid meteors are numerous and bright, so it is possible to have a clear view of the showers after the moon descends around 1:30 am.
